Qatar Airways and Virgin Australia Alliance Gains Final Approval, Unlocking New Era in Australia–Middle East Connectivity

Date:

ACCC gives green light to landmark partnership as Virgin Australia prepares to launch long-haul services to Doha in 2025, backed by Qatar Airways investment

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has granted final approval to the strategic alliance between Qatar Airways Group and Virgin Australia, setting the stage for a transformative expansion in air connectivity between Australia and the Middle East, as well as to Europe and Africa.

The decision clears the way for Virgin Australia to operate 28 weekly flights to Doha from major Australian cities under a wet-lease arrangement with Qatar Airways, beginning June 2025 from Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth, followed by Melbourne in December 2025. These long-haul services will connect seamlessly through Hamad International Airport, one of the world’s leading aviation hubs, offering access to over 100 global destinations.

GCC Airlines Eye Expansion as Qatar Airways Deepens Australia Presence

The alliance’s final authorisation also comes just weeks after the Australian government approved Qatar Airways Group’s 25% equity stake in Virgin Australia, reinforcing Qatar’s long-term strategic investment in the Asia-Pacific region and aligning with its broader ambitions across global aviation.

For the Gulf aviation sector, this development signals a powerful expansion model, combining equity investment, operational collaboration, and network integration to deepen influence in high-growth international markets. The move also positions Qatar Airways as a key player in shaping the future of Australia’s aviation landscape, where demand for long-haul, full-service options has surged post-pandemic.

“This marks a new chapter in the relationship between our two airlines,” said Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, Qatar Airways Group CEO. “Our joint commitment to competition, service quality, and job creation is delivering tangible benefits to Australian passengers and the broader economy.”

Economic and Employment Impact

The partnership is expected to generate AUD 3 billion in economic value over the next five years and create significant employment opportunities. In 2025 alone, 20 Virgin Australia pilots and 40 cabin crew will take up secondments with Qatar Airways, further strengthening workforce integration between the two airlines.

Dave Emerson, CEO of Virgin Australia, called the agreement a “defining moment” for the airline. “This strategic partnership with Qatar Airways is already delivering results through increased fare competition and expanded global access for our customers.”

The enhanced connectivity and loyalty benefits—linking Qatar Airways’ Privilege Club and Virgin’s Velocity program—also create added value for frequent flyers across both hemispheres.

Sustainability and Long-Term Vision

Both airlines have committed to deepening cooperation on sustainability initiatives, with a joint Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in late 2024 focusing on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), environmental management, and workforce development.

With Qatar Airways now formally recognised as a shareholder alongside majority owner Bain Capital, the partnership represents a rare fusion of strategic capital, operational synergies, and shared vision—one that could serve as a model for future cross-regional airline alliances.

As GCC-based carriers continue to explore new investments and partnerships, the Qatar–Virgin Australia collaboration illustrates how airline equity stakes and route expansion can converge to unlock mutual growth—while enhancing connectivity between Australasia, the Middle East, and beyond.
